Will the Older Americans Act be Renewed?
Meals on Wheels. Area Agencies on Aging. Senior Centers. All these groups receive their funding from the Older Americans Act. Passed in 1965, the Act’s social services help over 10 million American seniors.
The Act established the Administration on Aging and the local Area Agencies on Aging, which contract with community organizations to provide the services. It also requires states to have long term care ombudsman programs. While historically, the OAA has attracted bipartisan support, it may be in danger now that congressional pockets are a bit tighter.
To learn more about the Area Agencies on Aging and the Older Americans Act in general, the Department of Health and Human Services has created a website here.
